Thrummed Mittens
Thrummed mittens are an Atlantic Canadian specialty: many of us grew up with a warm and cozy pair knit for us by a loved one. These mittens are super thick and warm thanks to their namesake thrums: little pieces of wool roving that line the inside of the mitt. In this class, you’ll review the basics of making mittens (a stretchy cast on for the cuff, working the thumb gusset, setting aside stitches for the thumb, working the palm, decreasing and grafting the top, and working the thumb), while also learning how to form your thrums from wool roving and how to knit them into your fabric so they stay put.
Skills Required Before Class: The knitter must already be comfortable with knitting basics (casting on, the knit stitch, binding off) as well as knitting small circumferences in the round with double pointed needles OR magic loop.
Materials to bring: 4 mm double pointed needles OR 4 mm 32” or 40” circular needles if you prefer magic loop, locking stitch markers, darning needle, and scissors.
Materials provided: yarn and pattern
Skill level: Advanced Beginner
Learn to Double Knit
Double knitting is a reversible knitting technique where 2 sides of your fabric are created at the same time. It’s excellent for toasty warm accessories (double thick hats!), squishy home goods (cuddly blankets!), and professional-looking garment finishes (double knit button bands!). Learn the basics while making a super cute sheep potholder: you’ll learn a tidy cast on, the basics of making 2-sided fabric, how to get tidy edge tension, how to read a double knit colourwork chart, and a bind off that matches your cast on.
Skills Required Before Class: The knitter must already be comfortable with the knit and purl stitches, casting on and binding off, and have done at least 1 stranded colourwork project before.
Materials to bring: 3.75 mm circular or straight needles, locking stitch markers, darning needle, and scissors.
Materials provided: yarn and pattern
Skill level: Intermediate

Materials included: Pattern + 6 colours of Jamieson’s Spindrift yarn
Needles & Notions needed: 3.0mm dpns & 2.0mm dpns (5 needles if you have them), row counter, scissors, tapestry needle
