UPCOMING EVENTS AND CLASSES:

Guest Speaker, SHIRL THE PURL

Join us Friday evening, September 18th from 7 to 9 at the Grand Pre National Historic Site where SHIRL THE PURL (Shirley A. Scott) will delight us with her prose. Knitting has a small but very important place in the Canadian psyche. It winds its way through our history and our literature, as well as having a strong presence in our material culture. In this entertaining talk, of interest to both knitters and non-knitters, Shirl will lead you along the paths of our rich Canadian knitting heritage.

Shirl is a well-known knitting writer and teacher. A native of New Brunswick, her first love is re-creating and adapting traditional knitting patterns from North Atlantic countries. Since moving to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2006 she has turned her attention to lace knitting, feeling that it symbolizes the beauty and fragility of life in hard places. Shirl is the author of Canada Knits: Craft and Comfort in a Northern Land (1990, McGraw Hill Ryerson), an easygoing history of knitting in Canada. From 1997 to 2003 she operated Knit With Us, a summer knitting school that traveled to Canada’s best-loved beauty spots. She was also the owner of Cumberland County Knitters for 10 years. Shirl now knits purely for joy, peace, tranquility, and the welcome opportunity to teach others about the knitting life.

Wine and cheese to follow.

Free will offering. All proceeds will benefit the Carey Me Fund for palliative care in the home.

SEPTEMBER CLASSES:
Knitting Little Lace Shawls, Saturday, September 19th, 10-3
taught by Shirl The Purl at Gaspereau Valley Fibres. In France, where fashion is everything, a little lace shoulder covering is sometimes called a fichu. Interesting to knit, the finished product can be spectacular. A fichu is a great way to dress up an outfit, especially when you use a skein or two of delicious luxury fibre yarn.

In this course you’ll learn the basic triangular shaping method used in the knitted lace shawls of many northern countries, how to work basic lace stitches, reading lace charts, preventing and correcting mistakes, adding beads as trim, finishing and blocking techniques, and even how to drape and wear your fichu with style. In short, everything you need to know to launch your career as a lace-knitting fashionista.

A list of materials will be provided to registrants. Only stash yarn and readily accessible materials are needed for the class, but you will be invited to purchase yarn for a luxury project if you wish. Registration includes a free Fiber Trends pattern for this project.

Register early, as class size is limited to eight people. Cost: $50.00 per person.

Series of Mini Workshops in Spinning, Carding and Felting

Instructor: Marilyn Rand

Textile artist, Marilyn Rand, works from her home studio in Delhaven, Nova Scotia. After thirty years in textile related industries, Marilyn is now working full time at her craft. An avid spinner, felter and knitter, Marilyn raises a flock of fibre sheep to supply raw materials for her creations. “Ten years of crossing wool breeds to achieve quality wool has been an exciting learning curve for me.” Marilyn has taught knitting courses at Holland College, PEI, and Memorial University in Saint Johns, NF. Working through government-sponsored programs, Marilyn did a number of “on the job training programs” in Nova Scotia and Northern Quebec, working with First Nations Cree women. “Starting our farm was like a step backward in time for me. I had gone from the top of technology in knitting back to the grass roots. I am now spinning wool from my own sheep in the same way my grandmother and great-grandmother did. For me, the beauty in the yarns has always been the texture and colour.” Marilyn now creates mostly hand spun, hand knit garments and hand felted hats, scarves, purses, and accessories from her own patterns. Marilyn also teaches a wide range of courses in spinning, felting, knitting, silk fusion and dyeing.

Summer/Fall 2009

February 2010

Spring is well under way in the valley and with the warm weather comes some new additions to Gaspereau Valley Fibres. First is the new Elizabeth spinning wheel from Ashford. This gorgeous piece has a 24" wheel and the single treadle creates a smooth, calming motion while spinning, and the horizontal lazy kate holds three bobbins, which gives you a total of four all together. This wheel has turned into a shop favorite. Stop in and give it a try!
Next is the new Sidekick from Schacht. The design of this wheel is something new and different!  This is a sturdy little wheel that can fold up for easy transport. And the best thing? It includes an adjustable strap that lets you sling it over your shoulder like a knapsack! These wheel are due to arrive in the shop in the next few weeks.
The last addition are these cute little faces. All the lambs have been born and it's so much fun to look out the window and see them playing (or in this case, sleeping) in the pasture.

Sheep Thrills completed their sweater in 9 hours and 30 minutes – half an hour quicker than last year – placing them at 6th in the world! Great job ladies! $560 was also raised for Carey Me. A huge thank you to everyone who came out and supported the cause, as well as to Marilyn Rand, FibrEnsembleSarah Nettleton and The Noodle Guy for their contributions to this special event. Here are a few photos of the fun had that day.

It feels like Christmas in the shop with something new coming in the door every other day. Brenda and Manda had a blast checking things out at TNNA, and new things should be arriving in the shop almost every week until Christmas. Here is a small sampling of what has arrived so far:
New Herdy items! We have aprons, bags, stitch markers and cards, all with the great Herdy sheep looking back at you. And while you're in the cooking mood, check out the patterns from "Knit Cook" that we have. A knitting pattern that comes with a recipe. Knit one, cook too.
Habu Heaven! Linen, paper, mohair, silk, cotton gima,  stainless steel – it's all here! New patterns to try as well.
Sausalito sock yarn from Crystal Palace yarns. A beautiful 2-ply yarn slow-striping yarn that is sure to please the pickiest foot.
And last but not least, goodies and gadgets! Dumpling cases, buttons, stitch markers, row counters, sweater shavers, wool washing bags, blocking wires, pom pom makers, puppy snips – you name it! Stop in and check out the fun.

Placing 9th out of 13th teams, Sheep Thrills came in first out of the three Nova Scotia teams that were competing. A big thanks to: Delia Burge who supplied the fleece for this years sweater; Marilyn Rand who took the sweater home and washed it, and properly seamed it and presented us with this beautiful final product; FibrEnsemble from PEI for creating and donating a felted shawl for a raffle prize, as well as some hand spun yarn and for giving felting workshops in the afternoon; Tina Morse for lending her hands and knowledge whenever they were needed; Sarah Nettleton for the shearing expos and for answering all the questions everyone had; our sponsors who helped make our team uniform possible; and lastly (but not least) everyone who purchased a raffle ticket and came out the day of to support the event, none of this would be possible without you. Brenda and Manda took a trip to Ohio at the beginning of June to check out the annual TNNA Yarn Market They were able to get a sneak peek at all the new yarns and designs for this fall.  They both took a few classes and were able to meet Norah Gaughan from Berroco and Gail Callahan, author of Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece. They shared a cookie with designer Nicky Epstein, and got to talk with Jess and Casey from Ravelry. With over 800 suppliers, they tried their best to see (and feel) everything. Some of the suppliers that caught their eyes were:Habu Textiles, The Natural Dye Studio, Ysolda Teague, Debra’s Garden, Pear Tree Yarns among many others. They returned home with their orders placed and excitement brewing for the new goods to arrive. Be sure to stop in the shop and ask to see what’s new. Things will be arriving every few weeks and we look forward to introducing some new fibres and yarns into the store. Be on the lookout for our newest addition, Berroco’s Remix, which should be arriving soon. Here is Manda modeling one of the jackets from the pattern booklet. A perfect piece to get started on for fall, and just one of many new things to come.

A long awaited TNNA item has arrived. Brenda and Manda fell in love with these Herdy mugs while they were in Ohio. They arrived just before Christmas and have been a big hit with everyone who has visited the store. We currently have three styles in the shop: Classic, Peep and Wooly. The Classic and Peep are both microwave and dishwasher friendly, while the Woolley are made out of bone china. These are the perfect mugs to cozy up with for an evening of knitting, crocheting or even just reading a good book! Which one will you pick?
With February just around the corner, we have stocked up on some great Fleece Artist Goodies! We have just received in 40 kilos of seconds from Minesville. It is a good selection of yarn that would make great hats, mittens and some nice cushy socks. Discounted to over 50% off, you don’t want to miss these!
Here’s a new “spin” on an old favorite. Love Lady Godiva, but always wished it was a bit thicker? Maybe a bit thinner? Now is your chance to take creative control. We have a few bumps of Lady Godiva spinning fibre in stock. This wool and silk blend is strong, beautiful and just asking to be spun into something luxurious.
Kidazzle has arrived at Gaspereau Valley Fibres. Try out this new sock yarn and see what wonders you can knit with it. Containing wool, mohair and nylon, this yarn is not only machine washable, but durable and elegant as well.
When Brenda and Manda went to TNNA last year, one of the most interesting vendors they visited was Habu Textiles from NYC. Habu is a gallery with a working weaving studio inside as well. They also have a store where they sell yarn that they import from Japan and Asia.

Tsumugi Silk 450yrd/cone, $15. Perfect for Miriam Felton's Flutter Scarf. Click the picture above to be taken to the pattern.

The Kusha Kusha is knit using both Habu’s fine merino and a yarn that is a blend of wool and stainless steel (yes you did read that right, stainless steel). The scarf is lightly felted when finished and has a sophisticated ruffle look that can be dressed up or dressed down. The stainless steel gives this garment a large amount of memory, so you are able to have it stay in whatever shape you choose to make it. Altogether, this kit is the most fun you’ll have for $18!

Get this pattern on Ravelry!

The Jacket kit has been the talk of the shop for the last few weeks. It is knit using a cone of paper linen (yes, paper yarn), and two cones of silk mohair. The texture is very soft, but crisp, because of the paper. It is a lightweight jacket, perfect for spring.

Everyone has been spring cleaning and we are excited to see what they have found! Stop in on May 7th any time after 9am and grab that last minute Mother's Day gift, or some new goodies for yourself. Great discounts in the store as well. Not just limited to yarn – fibre, finished items, equipment and even some housewares. Get here on time as things go quickly!

Everyone has been busy planning for this October, and we are excited to announce that the contests and events have been finalized. Some of the great contests this year are create your own name tag, longest thread and spin local: where people are being challenged to spin something using fibre as local to them as possible.
Some of the great events taking place this year include a talk from Richard Ashford about the history of Ashford, a fashion show of completed items, great demos and a social time at the Old O Barn. This year there is also a scholarship available to a beginner spinner between the ages of 18-25. Check out all the latest news on the website!

Please note that the shop will be closed from Thursday, August 11th until Tuesday, August 16th at noon. Thursday afternoon knitting WILL still be taking place on the 11th, and the shop will reopen at noon on the 16th. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Schacht has announced their newest wheel – The Sidekick. The first thing you notice about this wheel is its design, looking like a cross between a spinning wheel and a stationary bicycle! This wheel weighs in at 13 pounds, with long, comfortable treadles. An orifice height of 25″ makes for comfortable spinning and the whole thing folds up to travel like a dream! Gaspereau Valley Fibres has two on order and everyone is very excited to try them out. Be sure to keep your eyes on the website for when they arrive!

Gaspereau Valley Fibres was very sad to hear that Mission Falls will be closing their doors after 19 years of providing people with beautiful wool and cotton. Winter has fully arrived here at Gaspereau Valley Fibres, and with it came the search for that perfect sweater pattern that will keep you toasty warm outside, but won’t cook you once you head indoors. Our top pick is Blue Sky Alpaca’s Brushed Suri Tunic.  Knit with Brushed Suri (67% baby suri, 22% merino, 11% bamboo) this tunic is soft as a feather and weighs about the same. This has been a favorite in the shop, and Blue Sky Alpaca has a nice variety of colours to choose from. The tunic has lots of sizing option and does not require a huge amount of yarn to knit. Using a 6.5mm needle, this is a fast easy project that will be keeping you warm in no time.

Gaspereau Valley Fibres is very excited to welcome Gilbert to the shop A creation of fibre artist, Marilyn Rand, Gilbert is a beautiful ram with a fleece of many colours and real horns to boot! Gilbert has been on display at the Acadia Art gallery for the last few weeks, and is now calling the shop his home for the next little while.
Gilbert is a great reminder that yarn and fibre can have many uses outside of knitting, spinning and felting. Marilyn shows us that the sky really is the limit. Wonderful job Marilyn, even the sheep at River Road Farm are excited for him to be here!
We love having Gilbert in the shop and encourage everyone to come and meet him just like Willow did. Come down and be sure to say hi!

Fleece on earth and good wool to ewe – Happy holidays and a very, merry new year.

GVF is excited to announce that they will be hosting the 11th annual Maritime Handspinner’s Retreat at the Old Orchard Inn in Greenwich, NS. “Spin Local” is the theme – focusing on fibres that are local to you, and just how many different kinds of fibre there are in the Maritimes – and it will take place on October 14, 15 and 16th 2011. Be sure to watch the website for updates and information. We hope to see you there!

Looking for a home for this registered Cotswold ram, born this past winter (February 2010). The Cotswold breed are known for their lovely, long, lustrous fleeces, and this little guy is no exception. Asking $250, call or email (902) 542-2656 or brenda@gaspereauvalleyfibres.ca

Marg Zillig stopped into the shop the other day and dropped of this beautiful Icelandic lamb skin for us to display and sell in the shop. This skin was donated by Bill and Kathy Crowson of Carwyn Farm and Marg hand tanned it herself.  The Icelandic sheep are a rare breed, and this fleece is something to behold. The proceeds of this lambskin will go to the “Zillig Memorial Fund” at the NSAC in memory of Gernot and Edith Zillig. The fleece is being sold for $200 and would made a beautiful addition under the Christmas tree. A great fleece for a great cause!

We at GVF feel this yarn deserves its own special spotlight. Our latest order of Big Merino has arrived from Fleece Artist and we cannot get enough of it. This merino wool is a lofty, bulky weight yarn that knits up beautifully. It is perfect for the beginner, looking to make a quick first scarf, but is also perfect for the more experienced knitter who might like a nice, squishy cowl or pair of adult sheepskin slippers (seen below). The Fleece Artist team has outdone themselves with a wide assortment of colours to choose from. Do not miss out on this great yarn, priced at $8 a skein, it won’t be here for long!

We are also happy to announce that we completed the pattern for these adult sheepskin bottom slippers. The pattern has been adapted from the baby bootie pattern, and is a quick knit using Big Merino. Stop in to grab a copy and give them a whirl!

As many of you know, Gaspereau Valley Fibres is neighbors with the wonderful L’Acadie Vineyards. There has been talk of having the sheep help them with their pruning for some time now, but this last month we were finally able to make this a reality! Here are the sheep in the vineyard munching on some grass and exploring their new surroundings. Be on the lookout in the new year for the Nova Scotia Ice Wine Festival as GVF will be hosting some events featuring the amazing ice wine of L’Acadie Vineyards.
