Learn to Knit Socks

  • with Jamie Whitcomb
  • April 1st, 8th, and 15th from 1-4 pm
  • $65 + HST (materials included except needles)

Socks are always an awesome project to knit, even as the weather is warming up! They’re small, they’re portable, and they’re simple to do- what could be better? Join Jamie and learn to knit a classic cuff down heel flap style sock from start to finish. Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Class 1: Casting on, changing colours, and Sock 101
  • Class 2: Turning the heel
  • Class 3: Working the toe, Kitchener Stitch, and weaving in ends so they don’t make bumps in your socks.

Required Materials: Knitters will need to bring 3.25 mm double pointed needles, and the usual notions (scissors, a darning needle, and a measuring tape). The yarn and pattern (and snacks!) are provided.

Skill level: Knitters should already know how to knit, purl, k2tog, ssk, and knit in the round.

Learn to Crochet!

  • April 10th 6-9pm at the Wool 'n Tart
  • $40+ HST (includes materials)

This class is for absolute beginners to learn the basics of crochet. You will learn about how to choose an appropriate yarn, hook size, and pattern. We will cover techniques for holding and using the hook as well as managing string tension. The course will cover basic stitches: chain, single crochet, and double crochet. We will work towards making a granny square – something that could be used as a dish cloth, coaster, or the beginning of a blanket!

No experience necessary.

Yarn will be provided, but please bring a 6mm crochet hook.

Little Lace Luxuries

Open the door to a whole new world of elegant knitting! Lace is made of two simple elements- thread and air, transformed in a thousand ways using a few simple increases and decreases. This one-day course will set you firmly on your way. Topics covered include: cultural aspects of lace knitting, choosing fibres (wooly or silky, simple or luxurious), reading lace patterns and charts, gauge and shaping, wet blocking, frogging and lifelines, plus much, much more.

What to bring:

  • One pair 4mm needles, or a 4mm circular needle of convenient length. We will be working flat on 34 seiches. Pointy tips are best!

Macrame Plant Hanger

Beginner Spinning

Learn the ancient craft of making yarn on a spinning wheel with Sam Haley of Maple River Farm. You will learn the mechanics of operating the wheel, different ways to prepare wool for spinning, drafting the wool, and to create your first single ply yarn.There will be different styles of wheels available for you to try. The use of a wheel and materials are included.

Needle Felting

Needle felting is a fun and satisfying craft. Create your own 3D sheep while learning tips and tricks about this traditional technique. Needle felting experience would be considered an asset but is not necessary.

Colour Theory through Fibre Prep

In this class you will learn  – some colour theory basics

  • How to card fibre with hand cards
  • How to blend different colours of fibre together with hand cards
  • Strategies for achieving a desired colour effect, to final knitted, woven, felted or hooked project
  • How to create a colour gradient set of carded fibre.

Learn How to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom

  • $80 + HST (includes materials)

The rigid heddle loom is very lightweight, portable and easy to use. In this class you will learn to warp the loom, weave a sampler and basic finishing techniques. Includes use of a rigid heddle loom for the day. Please bring your lunch.
