Classes: Fall 2023

The rigid heddle loom is very lightweight, portable and easy to use. In this class you will learn to warp the loom, weave a sampler and basic finishing techniques. There will be a maximum of 6 students in the class with 2 instructors. Includes use of a rigid heddle loom for the day. Please bring your lunch.

Are you wanting to expand your weaving skills? Join Tammy and learn how to make this lovely scarf. The class will cover how to thread two heddles for proper sett, how to weave with two heddles and using pick-up sticks! This class requires a minimum of 12″ rigid heddle with double heddle capabilities, 2 7.5 dent reeds, and 2 pick-up sticks, as well as the usual weaving paraphernalia. If you need a second heddle, please order at the time of registration. Students will come to class with their loom warped and will need to pick up their yarn and homework before class.

Skill level: Students must be able to warp independently and have some experience with pick-up sticks.

This class is perfect for your first sweater ever or for those who want to create their own unique sweater design. Tammy will walk you through everything you need to knit a top down raglan pullover or cardigan beginning with choosing the right yarn right through to choosing increases and just the perfect cast off. For the budding designer, think about adding pockets, hoods and other personal touches! This sweater can be as simple or as complex as you want.

Skill level: Advanced Beginner

Create a beautiful pair of felted slippers customized to your size. You will learn to create firm, strong felt… lots of techniques to grow your felting skills. We will not be putting a sole on these, but some suggestions will be offered if you would like to add some.

Shetland Wool Week takes place between Sept 23 & Oct 1 this year. If you not in Shetland, why not join us for the next best thing? Knit Alison Rendall’s Buggiflooer Beanie and learn to:
– Select colours for Fair Isle designs;
– with 2 colours without tangling and
– Knit in ends as you go.

Materials: Pattern will be provided. Yarn to be purchased.

Join Jenna and learn to spin your own yarn! Jenna will take you through the steps of spinning your first yarn. You will learn the essential spinning vocabulary, learn to spin using a drop spindle and gain the skills to spin beautiful singles.

A drop spindle and fibre is included in the cost of the class.

Learn the ancient craft of making yarn on a spinning wheel with Sam Haley of Maple River Farm. You will learn the mechanics of operating the wheel, different ways to prepare wool for spinning, drafting the wool, and to create your first single ply yarn.There will be different styles of wheels available for you to try. The use of a wheel and materials are included.

Did you know you can weave up to twice the width of your rigid heddle loom? Join Tammy and learn how to double the width of your loom! We will learn how to thread and weave a 40” x 48”blanket on your 24” or greater loom.

This class requires will a minimum of a 24” rigid heddle with double heddle capabilities, 2 7.5 dent reeds and 2 pick-up sticks at least 26”, as well as all the usual weaving paraphernalia. If you need a second heddle, please order at the time of registration.

Students will come to class with their loom warped and will need to pick up their yarn and homework before the class.

Create your own unique tapestry using the traditional technique of needle felting. Bring a photo of your favourite landscape or work from provided samples. Needle felting experience is not necessary but would be considered an asset.

Skill level: Beginner

When you spin, every thing you change, from fibre preparation to how you draft, affects the final yarn. You can be frustrated by this, or learn how to use these variables to create yarns you love. In this workshop participants will learn the basics of drum carding: exploring how to card fleece versus prepared fibres, blending, and adding non-wool fibres. We will also discuss drum carder maintenance. Students will then learn different spinning drafts and explore how these techniques affect yarn, using the different fibre preparations we have made on the drum carder, as well as combed top. Short forward draft, short backward draft, and long draw will all be explored. Students will produce sample skeins as we work through these techniques with the fibres we have carded.

Skill level: Intermediate

Learn basic stranding while creating a Fair Isle mitten. This workshop will help you work with 2 colours without tangling and recognize the colour principles that make Fair Isle designs effective. Cheryl den Hartog will share her stranding lessons learned – what works and what doesn’t.

Materials Provided : Original pattern and 5 colours of 100% wool.

Danish designer Tina Vejlø Andersen has created a pattern for a sweet trio of Evergreen
trees. Worked with Jamieson’s Spindrift yarn each tree section is defined by pleats and uses
a different stitch motif. A wee challenge to knit Ms Andersen combines small twisted cables to create
texture and interest all without a cable needle.Completed trees measure 7, 8 & 10 cms tall.

Materials included: Pattern + 6 colours of Jamieson’s Spindrift yarn

– 3.0mm dpns & 2.0mm dpns (5 needles if you
have them)
– Row Counter, Scissors, Tapestry needle

Skill level: Experienced

Create a beautiful felted fully lined bag in this two session workshop. You may choose to create the bag with a leather strap and details, or create the strap with felt. The length of the strap can be made for crossbody, shoulder or handbag. The metal hardware is nickel colour. You will create your bag in the colour you choose from the available stock of Corriedale.

Please note: this is not a beginner workshop. It is suggested that you are comfortable felting with a resist. We will be creating a firm, strong felt… lots of techniques to expand your felting skills.
