Introduction of Medieval Fingerloop Braiding

  • with Jenna Holtz
  • Sept. 20th 10am-12pm
  • $35 + HST (includes materials)

Learn the basics of fingerloop braiding – a technique for making braids that has been used at least since the Medieval age!  Students will learn two variations of a basic design, as well as a more challenging braid.  All three braids are historically accurate and are known to us because Medieval monks left us instructions in their manuscripts.  Students will also learn how fibre type (wool, silk, cotton, and linen) affect the properties of the braid.  Fingerloop braids were historically used as drawstrings, for finishing seams on garments, as decorative trim, and as lacing for footwear and clothing.  They can still be used for these purposes, perhaps as a drawstring on a hoodie or bag, or as shoelaces.  They also make unique bracelets.  There are no prerequisite skills for this workshop, but proficiency in friendship bracelets and cat’s cradle are a good predictor of success.

Available for children age 12+.
